Icelandic Social Security

Medical Cost Insurance covers the expenses that the insured must pay other than those protected by health insurance provided by the Icelandic social security. Individuals that are protected by the Icelandic social security do pay for medical services, but less than those that are not covered by social security. The Medical Cost Insurance covers the difference between those two sums but starts at a minimum amount of ISK 50,000.

Example: Patient A is protected by the Icelandic social security and pays 30,000 for a particular medical treatment. Patient B, not covered by the social security, has to pay 100,000 for the same treatment. The difference amounts to ISK 70,000 and is covered by the Medical Cost Insurance. Since the personal liability is ISK 50,000, the Insurance will pay 20,000.
